A soft breeze blew in through Iris's partially open window. She sat on her bed, with a blanket draped across her legs, the smooth surface of the comforter cool to the touch. A gossamer drape hung above the window, tied back with silver ribbons onto curly hooks. The lace panels fluttered and glowed like moonlight on water. Iris pushed them aside, exposing herself to the night air. In front of her was a beveled mirror framed by sheers held off to either side by two carved angel wing-backs. A low light shone from a bedside lamp near her feet, spreading out into a floor-length standing mirror that reflected back at her. On top of an antique cherry dresser sat a Tiffany lamp with three stained glass shades, its round bulb throwing out slivers of rainbow color that played over her skin and made her look like an ancient goddess Iris herself had created from memory.
